Why was Wonders of Maths started?

While on gardening leave between jobs, our founder and CEO François helped his eldest daughter prepare for the 11+ exams. Her success in these assessments quickly caught the attention of other parents and word spread quickly that he might be willing to take on a few more students. Requests for tutoring grew rapidly, and, within just two months, François found himself working with 20 students!

When the time came to return to work, it was clear to François that there was a significant demand for high-quality, engaging maths education. Many of his students were enrolled in top private schools across London, yet parents were dissatisfied with both the standard of teaching and the effectiveness of traditional tutoring. Schools weren’t providing sufficient support, and existing tutors lacked the ability to truly engage students. François wanted to fill this gap.

As demand grew, so did the scope of what Wonders of Maths offered. What began as a purely maths-focused service soon expanded to include english, history, biology, chemistry, and physics. This wasn’t just about adding subjects; it was about applying the same high standards and personalised approach that made our maths teaching so effective across the wider curriculum. Wonders of Maths also evolved from traditional one-on-one lessons to include small group classes, allowing more students to benefit from tailored support and collaborative learning.

Throughout the expansion of Wonders of Maths, François’ aim has been clear and unwavering: to encourage a love for maths in every student by teaching them in their way.

We believe that every child can reach their potential if they are taught in the way that best resonates with them.

Our approach to tuition is based on personalised learning, which allows us to adapt our lessons and teaching to suit how each student best interprets information. Over the years, we have gathered valuable information about how students learn, which has enabled us to recognise and understand trends in education. For example, we have found that the UK education system often overlooks visual learning methods, despite 70% of our 300+ students being primarily visual learners. To bridge this gap, we have adapted our methods to reflect this fact. In particular, our use of the Singapore method for teaching maths, which incorporates visual tools like blocks to introduce algebra. This approach has enabled our Year 5 and above students to confidently tackle complex problems in competitions like the Junior and Intermediate Mathematical Challenges!
